Parent Engagement: A Key to Academic Success

Posted February 19, 2024

"What did you learn at school today?"

It's a phrase so many parents have uttered and so many children have shrugged at. The Covid-19 pandemic’s temporary shift of putting all school online and at home made many parents realize how little they know about what their children’s education looks like, and what’s more, that they want to know! But wanting to take charge of your child’s education doesn’t mean that you have to homeschool and personally teach them every subject. You need an education option that supports your parental engagement!

What is Parent Engagement?

Parent engagement has been studied and proven to be a key to academic success, but what does that mean? What does it look like to be involved? The beauty of the matter is that effective parental engagement has so much variety that it can be done by even the busy, exhausted, and overworked mom and dad (which let’s face it, is probably most of us). Parent engagement is when parents and teachers partner together to create uplifting educational experiences for children. When everyone is united in what the educational goals are, learning can extend beyond the classroom. Parents can engage by knowing what their child’s class is learning about and turn the generic “what did you learn today” question into a meaningful discussion about how light travels or facts about elephants. A family outing to the museum can be arranged the same week that history class is discussing a particular exhibit. Mom or dad can read that book that’s assigned for literature class too. Even simple acknowledgements of the work that children are putting into their learning does wonders to engage parents with a child’s education.

When parents are engaged, learning is not confined to a classroom. Children shift their perspective from viewing school as a tedious waste of time and see it as a piece in the larger structure of their learning and growth. It cultivates a spirit of lifelong learning.

Outcomes of greater parent engagement in education include higher grades, fewer behavioral problems, higher test scores, increased social skills, and greater likelihood of continuing in post graduate education. One study found that in adolescents, parents’ educational engagement was a protective factor against risky behaviors like substance abuse. In every stage of development, parent engagement in education creates positive ripples beyond the sphere of school. Parents also end up with peace of mind knowing what their children are learning, feel connected to their children, and have fun in the process.
